April: We Are All Connected

Dear Parents and Child Care Providers,

This month, in honor of Earth Day, we’re exploring the meaningful idea that everything and everyone is connected through the thoughtful and inspiring book We Are All Connected by Gabi Garcia, illustrated by Natalia Jimenez Osorio. Through simple language and vibrant illustrations, this story helps children understand how their actions, choices, and care for the world around them impact not only the Earth, but also each other.

As families read along, children are encouraged to slow down, notice nature, and recognize their role in protecting our planet. The story gently reminds us all, children and adults alike, that when we care for the Earth and one another, we strengthen the connections that help our communities and our world thrive.

ACTIVITY

This month’s activities invite children to explore creativity while reflecting on how everything works together—just like our planet. Using simple, mostly recyclable materials, children will create Earth‑inspired artwork while learning that small actions and movements can have a big impact.

Activity 1: Earth Marble Painting

You’ll need:

  • A recycled box (such as a shoebox or small delivery box)
  • Paper or coffee filters
  • Blue and green paint
  • Marbles
  • Tape

Secure the paper or coffee filter inside the recycled box using tape. Add a few drops of blue and green paint, then place marbles inside the box. Gently tilt the box back and forth, allowing the marbles to roll and spread the paint. As colors mix and move, discuss how the motion affects the design—just like how everything on Earth is connected and influences one another.

This activity supports fine motor skills, cause‑and‑effect learning, and early conversations about caring for our shared planet.

Activity 2: Earth Coffee Filter Painting

You’ll need:

  • Coffee filters
  • Blue and green paint
  • Paintbrushes or droppers
  • Paper towels or scrap paper for drying

Invite children to gently paint or drip blue and green paint onto coffee filters, watching the colors spread and blend to form their own version of Earth. Encourage them to notice how colors connect and flow together, sparking conversation about oceans, land, and how nature relies on balance.

This activity encourages creativity, sensory exploration, and mindfulness as children reflect on the beauty of our planet.

SONG

“Dear Earth”

This month’s featured song, “Dear Earth” by Sesame Street, is a heartfelt tribute to our planet and the many ways we can show care and appreciation for it. With gentle lyrics and familiar characters, the song invites children to reflect on nature, kindness, and the small actions that help keep our Earth healthy.

As families sing along, children are encouraged to notice the world around them—from the sky and the trees to the people and animals they share it with. The song supports early conversations about gratitude, responsibility, and how we are all connected to the Earth and to one another.

Play the song, move together, and talk about simple ways your family can show love for the planet every day.

We’ll see you at the next First Fridays!
