Community Voices (CV) is a 4 year advocacy project funded by the James Irvine Foundation, to develop parents and caregivers into advocates through community organizing in Los Angeles County.
Community Voices offers a safe and supportive environment for parents, or anyone who cares about children, to learn to use their voice to fight for our children and create change amid the issues.
Since 2006, Community Voices has worked to create access for over 1372 parents and caregivers, to share their concerns with state and local policy makers on a variety of issues.
Community Voices holds monthly meetings to provide training and technical assistance to its members in organizing and preparing to take action. The meetings are flexible and open to anyone who cares about issues concerning children in their community.
| 2010 ACCOMPLISHMENTS |
- Marched the streets of Sacramento on “Stand for Children Day”
- Dying for Revenue rally: CV brought 200 members to rally against the Governor’s budget cut to child care and CalWorks
- Sacramento Hearings: CV members testified against the budget cuts in front of the Assembly and Senate hearings in Sacramento
- Petition Letter Campaign: CV collected over 3,000 petitions from parents and child care providers requesting the Governor to not cut child care and CalWorks. The letters also contain a personal statement from each parent and provider about how these cuts would impact their livelihood
- Legislative Visits: Community Voices joined Child Care Providers UNITED (joint local of SEIU and AFSCME) on a statewide legislative districts visit campaign on behalf of Campaign to Save Child Care Coalition. On this day, a coalition of parents, child care providers and child care advocates conducted statewide visits to their local Assemblymember and Senators asking them to hold the line and protect child care from additional reductions and for revenue solutions to be part of the final budget.
